And it doesn't have to be us. I heard a report on the BBC today that the Indian navy has been given permission by its government to shoot first and ask questions later in that area. I would think it would be pretty easy to raise a multi-national force to handle this.

The Indian navy took out one of the mother ships the other day.

For those of you who think it would be easy to cover the Somali coastline, think again. Somalia has the largest coastline of any African nation, 1,879 miles.

I suppose we could always issue indictments. That will solve it. Then we can take the pirates out for ice cream cones.

  5. Well, things were going well here until someone rang the Fourth Grade Recess bell.

Alexander the Great said this "You must conquer the sea from the land."
He was right then, and it's right today. Until there is some functioning monopoly over armed force in Somalia-that is, a government-the pirates will flourish.
The ocean is very big, and ships are very small. Trying to stop piracy from the sea is like fighting crime in, oh, Baltimore with one beat cop.

  7. Alexander was a quote-machine, wasn't he?

He had great writers, and he stole from Aristotle when he was tutored.

As I have mentioned in other threads, my dad is in the oil business (and has a vested interest in these tankers being able to sail past Somalia). He tells me that one of the possibilities they are considering is using BlackWater guards on the oil tankers and barges.

But as for using the U.S. Navy, there is precedent for that. Iran and Iraq loaded the Persian Gulf down with mines during their war in the mid-80s, and U.S. Navy ships were used to escort tankers through the Gulf to the oil ports in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia.

You put rifles through portholes, allowing full movement toward the waters outside the ship (but no ability to be turned inward on the vessel).

Then, pick those little fuckers off.

  11. Problem is that it's so dark at night at sea that it's hard to hit fast little boats.

You don't want to escalate matters to the point where the pirates accidentally or on purpose SINK one of the boats, because then Lloyds of London comes into play, and the price of oil goes up another $10 a barrel for the insurance premiums.
