pet peeve -- strangle

    I too yell at the TV when the anchors don't practice correct usage. I can't listen to any newscasts without wanting to punch the person behind the desk for not reading their stylebook.

    Funny you bring this up.
    One of the requirements for the woman I would marry -- and I am not making this up -- is that I would never hear her use the word "party" as a verb.
    And I found her.
    We've been married nearly 26 years, happily.

    My pet peeve is "set a new record." If the record was just set, of course it's new. Just say, "set a record."

    Refute? That's another word often misused, even by professional writers.

    By the most stringent definition of the word, you're right. But "refute" is also liberally defined as "to deny," which I suppose makes it and "repudiate" pretty much interchangeable.
