Personalities who make sports moments bigger

While watching the Rangers-Yankees game earlier tonight, the announcers did a booth interview with Nolan Ryan. They got around to talking about his beatdown of Robin Ventura, and it struck me that that moment probably would not have remained so vivid in the public's mind for this long if it had been anyone other than a 40-something Ryan doing the pummeling. If it had been just some random pitcher, it's probably just another baseball brawl.

So what other sports moments live on that way just because of the people involved? What 500-foot home runs are remembered better because Mickey Mantle or Reggie Jackson hit it? What touchdown runs would just be another score if it hadn't been for Bo Jackson (his 90-yard TD run up the tunnel on MNF comes to mind) making it?

Bucky Dent's homer (or Ozzie Smith's in the NLCS for the same reason)

  3. The funny thing about Nolan Ryan is he usually avoids talking about that game. As far as I know, he still refuses to sign the famous picture of him lighting into Ventura.

That's because the guy is 100 percent class. Which is why I'm about to name my son Nolan. :)

Nolan Babar? The only way it could be worse for him is if you named him Arnold.
