In a U.S. government warning high on the creepiness scale, the Defense Department cautioned its American contractors over what it described as a new espionage threat: Canadian coins with tiny radio frequency transmitters hidden inside.

The government said the mysterious coins were found planted on U.S. contractors with classified security clearances on at least three separate occasions between October 2005 and January 2006 as the contractors traveled through Canada.
    ...
Further details were secret, according to the U.S. Defense Security Service, which issued the warning to the Pentagon's classified contractors. The government insists the incidents happened, and the risk was genuine.

"What's in the report is true," said Martha Deutscher, a spokeswoman for the security service. "This is indeed a sanitized version, which leaves a lot of questions."
    ...
Experts were astonished about the disclosure and the novel tracking technique, but they rejected suggestions Canada's government might be spying on American contractors. The intelligence services of the two countries are extraordinarily close and routinely share sensitive secrets.

"It would seem unthinkable," said David Harris, former chief of strategic planning for the Canadian Security Intelligence Service. "I wouldn't expect to see any offensive operation against the Americans."

I always thought the centre of a toonie was different for a reason... Sounds like a strange programme by the Canadians

And now you all know why we ditched our $1 and $2 bills in favour of coinage. :D

By the way, those of you who were at the outing in Toronto and took jingly Canadian currency home to America with you -- we thank you for your unwitting assistance and cooperation. The information has been most useful. Rest assured that after we have invaded and subjugated your nation, your deaths will be quick and merciful.

Makes one wonder why pennies are always going undetected on the ground in the U.S. Could it be that pennies are also spying on your every move?

This all started with the lucky loonie in the ice at the Winter Olympics in Utah. We thought it just had to do with hockey, but obviously it's much more sinister! :)

AP story mentioned that China, Russia and France all have big espionage operations in Canada, and it likely was them that bugged the coins, not the Canadians.

The AP lies! It is Canada that wants to do us harm. Not the Russians or Chinese. We need to set up Canadian internment camps across the country to make sure we can control the potential insurgents and revolutionaires.

Um, I think we'd have picked up on it if there were French people running around in Canada. ::)

    I mean, as if!
