Because all the sports teams in the world can't counter what happened to the steel industry at that time.

And it's not just about financial impact. It is about quality of life as well.

Oh yeah...and fuck off, Kansas City...you national-anthem-butchering, wanna-be-franchise-stealing losers. Get your own team!

scouts, a's, kings... i think kansas city knows a bit more about franchises being stolen than pittsburgh.

actually all the money from the casinos is tabbed for redevelopment in Pa. not just Pittsburgh, but the money from the Pittsburgh casino is the only casino money used on the arena

I'm glad they're staying in Pittsburgh but let's put a lid on the "economic impact" stuff. It's been proven over and over again that it's mostly superoverinflated figures by teams and local governments wishing to legitimize feeding at the public trough.

go look at a city like hartford that lost an NHL team, look how the areas around the stadium have turned to slums after the team left, you don't think that has any economic impact on a city?

Look at Pittsburgh last year in January and February. With the run the Steelers made in the playoffs and into the Super Bowl the city flourished even though they never played a home playoff game. Local Merchants couldn't keep merchandise on the shelves, bars and restaurants were packed, grocery stores were selling massive quantites of food for parties and whatnot. You don't think that has an economic impact on a city?

All the more reason to despise them for trying to take one from Pittsburgh. They should know better.

Besides, they keep losing teams for a reason.

    Screw 'em. :)

from what I hear, most KC people are actually happy Pittsburgh kept the Pens because everyone who follows the NHL knows that ... I personally don't see hockey working long-term in that city anyway, it should shift its focus to the NBA

Perception matters. Pittsburgh has already taken plenty of hits with its declining population and relatively recent bankruptcy. Losing a pro sports franchise makes it look even more like the city is dying. That leads to more people leaving, fewer moving in and businesses having less interest in coming there.

good point OOP, also, with the Pens staying, the perception is the city is on the rise, which it is, also the comments I made about the Steelers above are also true right now for the Pens and will get even better if the team makes a significant run in the postseason, just because Cleveland is America's garbage can doesn't mean every other city fucks up on how to benefit from pro franchises

That perception matters to people who paint their faces, not people who run major companies.

You don't think it looks bad to see something like that leave a city? Or you just can't back down from your argument no matter what?

The larger issue is the population growth and decline. And it is more than the people who paint their faces who might see a city as failing if a pro sports franchise leaves.

You're right. I can't begin to describe the scorn I developed for Denver, Minneapolis/St. Paul, Cleveland, Kansas City and Atlanta when they lost NHL teams.
