Reports: Pelphrey to take Arkansas job
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) — John Pelphrey will leave South Alabama to take over the Arkansas basketball program, according to reports.
FoxSports.com and CBS Sportsline.com, citing unidentified sources, reported Sunday night that Pelphrey will take the Arkansas job.
The Razorbacks have been without a coach since Stan Heath was fired March 26. They hired Dana Altman last Monday, but Altman changed his mind and returned to Creighton the next day.
South Alabama spokesman Kit Strief said Pelphrey will be in Arkansas on Monday, but he wouldn’t confirm that Pelphrey had taken the Arkansas job.
FoxSports.com said Pelphrey would be introduced at a news conference Monday, although Arkansas spokesman Kevin Trainor wouldn’t confirm that.
“We don’t have an announcement to make at this time,” Trainor said.
Arkansas athletic director Frank Broyles and South Alabama athletic director Joe Gottfried didn’t immediately return calls seeking comment.
During its search, Arkansas eyed Billy Gillispie, who later left Texas A&M to take over at Kentucky. The Razorbacks also received permission to talk to Memphis coach John Calipari.
Altman’s shocking reversal led Arkansas to enlist a search firm to help find a coach.
Pelphrey went 80-67 in five seasons at South Alabama, including 44-19 the last two seasons.
Arkansas went 21-14 last season and made the NCAA tournament for the second straight year, but the Razorbacks lost in the first round both seasons. Heath was fired and took the South Florida job.

How is Pelphrey an upgrade from Stan Heath?
Looks like a step down. At least Heath had been successful at Kent State.
If Arkansas had been bold, they would have offered one of Sutton's kids. That would made at least some the fans frothing idiots happy.

Next year should be a great indicator of just how good John Pelphrey is at coaching. Even with some academic and drug problems, the Hogs look like they should contend for the SEC West and a possible conference tourney title.

Broyles wasn't at the Masters? I could have sworn I saw him on TV today.

IF Beverley comes back. Has there been anything definitive on that yet? When Altman was hired he was supposedly 60-40 he would stay.
