    Company: Pegasus News, Inc.
Position: Managing editor who knows the rules just well
enough to know which ones to break
Location: Dallas / Fort Worth, Texas
    Job Status: Full-time
    Salary: Negotiable
    Ad Expires: September 17, 2007
    Job ID: 815082

    Description:

You'll take a committed (but admittedly somewhat inexperienced) team of newsies and whip them into a well-oiled machine. You know all the rules of Journalism and you know which ones need breaking. You're a collaborative leader and teacher. It would be nice if you knew the local DFW market well enough to have a couple dozen original story ideas the day you walk in the door. You have no snobbery whatsoever about "citizen journalism." You think that youth sports are every bit as important as the Dallas Cowboys and don't think it's weird to see the two side by side on a sports page. You believe in transparency in reporting and welcome comment and criticism from your readers. You understand that data is as important as narrative. You understand that a press release can matter if it reaches the right person. You like the feel of what you see on Pegasus News, but wish that there was more original news content here. You have a sense of humor, but know the difference between snarky funny and mean funny. You have good judgment. You think the way to take the reins of an existing team is to listen a while, ask a lot of questions, and then rally everyone around a common vision. It would be great if you had reporting, editing, column-writing and desk experience. You are willing to look at the numbers before making an informed gut decision on where to apply scarce resources.

Pegasus News is a new-model local news service that works with technology, content parnters, readers and a small staff to provide a complete and customized news experience for every local user. We've come through the leanest of times and have recently been purchased by Fisher Communications (NASDAQ: FSCI), meaning that words like "salary" and "benefits" are a new, but long-term, part of our vernacular. If you do an amazing job, there's lots of opportunity for growth as our group grows.

DO NOT RESPOND DIRECTLY TO THIS AD. The only way to apply is by filling out the form here: http://www.pegasusnews.com/jobs/.

(While cold-calling the office or hunting down our cell numbers might show initiative, it also means that with our small, busy staff you're unlikely to find the person you need to reach.)

If I think youth sports are every bit as important as the Dallas Cowboys, I have no place in journalism in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

For that matter, in the state of Texas applies as well.

  4. C'mon, guys. If you don't recognize the intrinsic value in awarding a centerpiece to Grand Prairie Junior High volleyball over T.O. calling for Tony Romo's benching, then you don't know the meaning of "community journalism."

With how many high schools are in that area, I am not sure why they would ever feel the need to cover community sports. Maybe that is their niche, but if they dominated their section with high school coverage they would still take readers away from the Morning News and Star-Telegram.

It is, after all, the grandest prairie of them all.

That was obviously hyperbole. However, Highland Park High is more important than the Cowboys.

And we'll be keeping those ideas for ourselves while pushing you right back out the door.

Excellent point. Then again, out there Highland Park is just about more important than anything. Lace drawers and all.

Highland Park, known to many as the 4A playoff opponent that brings signs to games that read "Cash vs. Trash."
