After reading that this one -- as small as it is -- coming three weeks before the season, this might be nature's way of restoring the balance after last year's very mild hurricane season. I just pray to the Lord that the Gulf Coast region is spared.

Thing has been sending clouds and wind gusts all the way up to here in DC since about yesterday. Was kinda creepy watching it on weather maps.

I hope you people don't write headlines for you newspapers... sheesh...

We really need the rain to move inland. But local weather guy says no, it won't. Figures.

    And so it begins.

Nowhere near me, so I'm just keeping a casual eye on it. Actually, Florida and Southeast Georgia really need this thing, with all the fires they're having.

NHC seems to think it'll die before making landfall. Given that it's treading waters of less than 77 degrees and dropping as it gets to the coast, and that the organization is poor, it'll be little more than a rainmaker, if that.

While we're on the subject, here's this year's hurricane names:

    Andrea
    Barry
    Chantal
    Dean
    Erin
    Felix
    Gabrielle
    Humberto
    Ingrid
    Jerry
    Karen
    Lorenzo
    Melissa
    Noel
    Olga
    Pablo
    Rebekah
    Sebastien
    Tanya
    Van
    Wendy

If the names sound familiar, this is the list (with replacements for retired names) from the 1995 season that served as the standard for the modern era before 2005. That year Tanya was the last name used. No fun names, unless the Skid Row singer uses that spelling for his first name. And Olga just screams bad news.

turns out this storm has been at sea longer than any other storm in history.

I'm predicting Barry hits the day Bonds breaks the record. It would seem appropriate.

Hopefully we don't make it to Ingrid, she sounds like she can kick ass. Humberto, now there's a storm where you go, "Aww, look, he's making the trees sway a bit. Isn't the cute?"

If there was a Lisa hurricane, and she and Wendy delivered some rain to Minnesota, that would be really, really cool.

    That would start a revolution.
