so you abbreviate to scc or scchs. and you adjust the tabs. it's not tough.

  4. Or possibly use the mascot names if needed, with the school's names listed above as a small header.

I have seen some extra-inning baseball boxes where the line score was broken up like this:

    Houston
    xxx...xxx...xxx...xxx...xxx...x--x...x...x
    San Diego
    xxx...xxx...xxx...xxx...xxx...x--x...x...x

I would think the same could be applied to football or basketball boxes when multiple OTs occur.

I have had to do that with baseball a few times.

Former. The box score is there to tell who did what when. Lumping all of the overtimes together doesn't show that, and doesn't tell you how many overtimes occurred. Also, a high school team can't score more than 8 points in an overtime football game so it looks confusing unless broken down by OT periods.

That's not an answer for why you do something.

Overtimes should be listed as separate periods. Don't care if you have to shorten the school names to WB and EL, separate periods.

Reason: AP does it that way.

Here is how we did it when I worked desk:

    Podunk...... 0 0 0 0 (6) (0) (7) — 13
    Bigcity....... 0 0 0 0 (6) (0) (6) — 12

I don't know why, but that's how we did it.

NOTE: Edited from the original (with score changed) because typing an 8 between parentheses gives you (8). Looked kinda cool, though. Maybe boxscores should have smiley faces in them.

If they did have smilies, I'd think they'd be approproate following each team's total:
    Podunk...... 0 0 0 0 (6) (0) (7) -- 13 8)
    Bigcity....... 0 0 0 0 (6) (0) (6) -- 12 :(
