Over vs. More than

    Yeah, those seem a bit overzealous.
    Again, I was not saying these shouldn't be changed if there's time to change them. For that matter, how about we coach writers to write it correctly in the first place? Just saying that they don't upset me like they once did and that if forced on deadline to choose between changing all the "overs" or double-checking facts and writing better headlines, I can live with a few "overs" and "wins" that used to make me blow a gasket.

    I don't mean to interrupt a pissing match, but I have a question about over and more than.
    What about this construction? "While Sanders was a game breaker, George averaged just over two yards per carry."
    "Just more than" sounds stupid. Taking out "just" and just going with "more than" changes the meaning of the sentence.
    Don't you think "over" would be OK in this case?

    Ya know, you can avoid the whole more than/over or less than/under debate by just saying George averaged somewhere around 2 yards per carry.
