Orlando Cruz becomes first active boxer to announce he is gay

    I'm not mocking the sport itself. I'm mocking one of the symbols of corruption of the sport, which is a championship belt for nearly every competitor.

    Now, if a boxer is non-Latino, would they be able to fight for the Latino featherweight title? Seeing the fact that gays battle discrimination in their lives, it seems pretty ironic that the first announced gay boxer is trying for a championship that may discriminate against other fighters.

    It's ironic that the Negro leagues that tried to integrate baseball weren't integrated themselves.

    On October 19, Orlando Cruz had his first bout since coming out and won by unanimous decision.

    Also talking of Cruz, Donald McRae (a sports journalist who, back in the late 90's, published an excellent boxing book called Dark Trade: Lost in Boxing) recently wrote a long piece on him.
