Yeah, that's exactly it. Very insightful of you.

If the NCAA wants to regulate stuff, it should take a look at regulating this stuff. Talk about inequity and unfair advantages!

Absolutely - they could ban schools from building a nice locker room.

Revenue sharing and then there could be a salary cap.

They should put a cap on much money an athletic department can receive from outside boosters.

Is it really fair that Oregon has a billionaire like Phil Knight and Oregon State doesn't?

Oregon State's major benefactors (Reser family, Valley family, Austin family) give far, far more money to academics than athletics, although they do support athletics. They are a big reason there's been a huge classroom/dorm/student services building boom on campus over the past decade. OSU is just about to hit the $1 billion mark in its ongoing capital campaign.

Who gives a shit if it's fair? Phil Knight created Nike as a student-athlete at Oregon, with the help of a track coach. Want your own Phil Knight? Help develop one, like Bill Bowerman did at Oregon. Nike exists because of what Phil Knight got out of Oregon as a student and he's paying it back in spades.

And why should a school funnel its own money into athletics when it can spend that money on academics and have donors pick up the tab on athletics?

Reser's name is on the football stadium. The Knight name is on Oregon's law center and library because of his support there. He also gave $105 million to Stanford's business school.

The donations are nice and all, but I wouldn't want the school to sacrifice its integrity if the donations came with strings attached, such as prohibiting criticism.

  10. Because no organization or person attaches any conditions to donations.

I have no problem at all with Knight's connection to Oregon.

That being said, I do have a severe problem with cities like Baltimore and Cleveland that have publicly funded stadiums while their school systems are in shambles. A private individual giving tons of cash to his alma mater is understandable. A city gouging the public for a stadium while ranking near the bottom of the nation when it comes to its public school system...that's insanity.

    You really think that?

If the NCAA wants to limit how many scholarships a school can give out in the name of competitive balance, why shouldn't it limit money that can be raised/spent on facilities?

People complain about athletes not being paid. Sheesh, look at the things they get access to that the average student does not: private tutors, study halls, doctors, trainers, special dining halls and menus, trips to all sorts of places, etc. These people are not exactly living in hardship.
