I grew up an Alabama fan, though I was only 9 when Bryant died. But I've become something of an amateur Crimson Tide football historian since then, and I'd never heard that allegation until "Al from Dadeville" made it. Not saying it didn't happen, but it's not something that resonates with Alabama fans I know.

EDIT: An Auburn blogger has compiled "Auburn reax" news clips from the days following Bryant's death, and there is no mention of Toomer's Corner being rolled:

Never heard that one either. I do know they've rolled it whenever probation was announced for Bama, but that's as close as it has ever come.

Charles Barkley on the Toomer's Corner tree situation: "We're from Alabama -- you can't make this s--- up. Some things just happen there, and people want to know why we rank 48th in education. It's just sad. I would have felt better about it if it was a young kid. But an old man who has nothing better to do? That's just sad."

My favorite yesterday was F-bum whining on the air about not getting credit for helping catch this guy... what with the guy calling his show after he did it to brag about it.
Hey dickhead, if you were such a hateful little troll who panders to the lowest common denominator in the first place, this guy might not have had the courage to do something this stupid and brag about it on your show.

Oh, while he was patting himself on the back, he did say something like "hey, what if poisoning the water supply was next?"

Bham News general columnist did a pretty good job of taking Alabama -- the state, not the college -- to task for this. But it won't matter. Next week, it's back to the same.

I'd like to see all of the SEC schools dig up a mature tree from each campus and donate it to Toomer's Corner. It would be a cool, Southern thing to do, IMO.

The soil probably won't be able to support trees for 3-5 years, so they'd have to redo the entire area.

Excellent column by John Archibald from B-Ham news. Here's the link again:
    http://blog.al.com/archiblog/2011/02/archibald_alabama_needs_an_int.html

Talk about validating his point. Read the comments below. There are people complaining about his suggestion that U of Alabama should buy Auburn new trees in the spirit of reconciliation. The posters' point being, essentially, 'I feel bad about what happen, but why should Alabama be held responsible in any way for what this idiot did.'

Wow. Not a lot of hope for at least a chunk of the fandom down there.

He's spent two days saying it's not his fault and no one should blame him or his callers.
And his troll callers are starting to come out from under the bridge and bitch.

And Ralph? Nice job on the D_B... five whole posts away and you couldn't read up?

If you use al.com commenters to gage the feelings of humanity on any topic, you'll be driven to jump off a bridge by sundown.
