Van was the first. U2's Gloria was a completely different song -- it was the religious kind, not the girl's name kind.

Patti Smith's Gloria is a combination of both, if you insert sac- in front of religious -- "Jesus died for somebody's sins/but not mine."

Although of the four songs on their first album that include a girl's name, the only one that fits is "Diane."

    Great band, by the way.

    A few more:

    "Maureen," Fountains of Wayne
    "Cholly," Fishbone
    "Ruby," Kaiser Chiefs
    "Gracie," Ben Folds
    "Judy," The Pernice Brothers
    "Jeanette," The English Beat

Y'got most of 'em, so I won't scroll through 2 1/2 pages. I'll add some that may be missing:

Bobby Jean - Bruce Springsteen (OK, so it's two words, but it's her name, dammit!)
Maggie May - Rod Stewart (see Bobby Jean)
OK, shit, so they aren't one word. Sue me:

    Darling Nikki - Prince
    Oh, Donna - Ritchie Valens
Barbara Ann - hell if I know. It's late and I'm tired.
    Jolene - Dolly Parton? -- There, y'happy?

If Oh, Donna counts, then so does Oh, Sheila. Oh, Oh, Oh, Oh, Sheila
