Exactly. Whether you like Rush or not, it's hard to argue they are not a giant success despite having no Bb top 40 hits.
That's why it is difficult to lump the Grateful Dead in with Sugarloaf, even though they each had one top 40 song.

But again, I don't think one-hit wonder should carry the negative connotation that it does. Even one hit record is a hell of an accomplishment.
Sugarloaf should be proud of the accomplishment. So should Robert Hazard or any other performer we've been discussing.
    Like the Lemon Pipers.
    Or UTFO.

But not Jimmy Ray. He just sucks.

You know who else fits shotty's definition? Jimi Hendrix.

The distinction needs to be made between bands with one top 40 hit and "one-hit wonders," which pretty clearly refers to artists who would be as anonymous as you and I if not for that one song.

It should be fairly easy for us to illustrate the differences here.

The mother of an SNL cast member was a one-hit wonder.

Excellent point. That's why I linked those definitions.
There are performers who transcend hit-single, commercial assessment. Zappa is another.
And record can go gold and platinum without ever making the Bb top 40.

True. Arguing was the wrong word. Discussing is probably better.

My definition really comes down to remembering a band for one and only one song.

    Fuck this BB Top40 definition.

Rush did have a top-40 hit ... "New World Man," off Signals.

But they're just one-hit wonders, never did anything else of note.

Tony Burrows, who sang lead (or co-lead) on the following songs:

Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes) - Edison Lighthouse (US #5, UK #1 - 1970)
United We Stand - Brotherhood of Man (US #13, UK #10 - 1970)
    Gimme Dat Ding - Pipkins (US & UK top 10 - 1970)
My Baby Loves Lovin' - White Plains (US #13, UK #9 - 1970)
    Beach Baby - First Class (US #4, UK #13 - 1974)

He was actually a six-time one hit wonder in the UK, as he also sang lead on Let's Go to San Francisco (#4 UK - Flower Pot Men, 1967).

    Pretty remarkable.
