Do we know how many are currently in the newsroom?

Very familiar with this product and its decade-long toe-stubbing. Even after some pruning, there are layers of management that boggle the mind. Yet, it's still paying 80 percent of the health premiums (after paying an absurd 95 percent up to now). Real estate's tumble has hurt advertising, but the problems -- particularly one of vision -- are deeper. Good luck here.

    Dredging up old news, unfortunately.

My sources tell me more newsroom cuts are on the way, possibly soon, including in Sports, along with expected reorganization of some newsroom management and cuts to whatever remains of the copy desk. Freelance contributors will be looked at heavily to help shore up coverage.

Good luck to the U-T folks hanging on.

Union-Tribune has a great sports tradition. Sad to see.

One of my current co-workers used to work there. He says there is a ton of fat in sports department and in management.

Not sure how this can possibly happen in this day and age, but he says several reporters will be sitting around doing nothing but chewing the fat all day pretending to be busy.

I don't believe that for a second. This is a paper that has lost a baseball writer and at least two NFL writers in the last year or so, none of whom were replaced.

The place still wins a ton of APSEs every year.

Cuts at the U-T, along with "Junior" writer positions:

A good attorney would have age discrimination charges against the UT in 30 seconds. It's all but admitting they've cut high paying senior staff to bring in cheaper bodies.

    No kidding, slappy.

Geez, now we not only can't be senior writers, or staff writers; we have to be "junior staff writers."

The blatant devaluation and denigration our work and this business continues. It's incredible, and incredibly sad.

Junior Staff Writer. Sounds like when I was in elementary school and we'd get little badges after we took a tour of the fire station.
