Hartwig is extra cool because this was his fifth Olympic trials and the first, at 20, he blew.
Then made the team in '96. Blew it in the trials in 2000 and 2004, and is now back in the Olympics.
Caple wrote a nice piece for ESPN.

That was fucking cool! A spot in the Olympics on the line and he face plants to the tune of 0:00.06 better than the fourth-place finisher.

Saving it to go for the 10,000.

Meanwhile, Lagat just toyed with these guys

First time I ever saw Solinsky lose with his kick. He dominated the collegiate running scene, but I guess once you get up there with Lagat and Teggenkamp, it all changes. Lagat looked like it was effortless for him. He's a very special runner.

Tegenkamp looked like he was cleated with about 200 meters to go, lost a step, and surged to take second. Nice work.

That 800 race was amazing, as has been said. Symmonds made a great move, but Wheating also to take second. He didn't go until the last 100 meters, it looked like, and just strode past everyone. I think he really even stunned himself, and the faces on the leaders as they were being overtaken were priceless.

Thanks, spnited. Per a request from the hyper-sensitive newsies, we're watching it with the sound off.

To qualify for the 5,000, Goucher would have had to finish in the top 3 AND run the Olympic "A" standard of 13:33 (which he has not yet achieved). When he reached a point where he couldn't do both, he dropped out to save some strength for the 10,000.

Plus, his time of 1:45.47 was just under the Olympic A Standard of 1:46.

He was doing interviews with a giant hole in his shoulder. It was strange.
