Well, it's not the US hasn't been trying. New York was a finalist for the 2012 Games, Chicago for 2016.

I would expect a US big for every Olympics, winter and summer, until they get another one.

Winter has Sochi in 2014, Korea in 2018, so I figure the US has a shot for 2022 if they want it. Of course, if they sense they have a real chance for the 2024 Summer Games, they might back off. If it doesn't go US in 2022, then probably somewhere in western Europe or Scandinavia.

Summer Games in Rio in 2016, so that leaves Africa and North America, and possibly Tokyo the leading candidates for 2020. Toronto seems a prime candidate if they are interested.

If they hold it in Dallas, I hope it's at Christmas time.

2020 finalists will be announced tonight. Tokyo, Istanbul and Madrid probably will be among the three. The other two -- Doha and Baku -- might not make the cut.

I'd say in that group that Tokyo would be the odds-on favorite.

Average high temps for Beijing: July 88, August 86 (average lows 72 and 70)
Average high temps for Atlanta: July 89, August 88 (average lows 71, 71)
Average high temps for Dallas: July 97, August 96 (average lows 77, 76)

Last summer, Dallas had 65 100-degree days, 18 of them at 105 or hotter. The average high from June 1-Aug. 31, 2011 was 101.2 and the average low was 80 (OK, 79.9, you win). For August, the averages were 104.3 and 82.5.

Edit: Oops, forgot to look up Athens, Greece. Average highs: 90 July, 90 August. Average lows: 72 and 72.

    Istanbul should bid as Constantinople.

Doesn't Madrid have other things to worry about right now than dropping a billion dollars for a couple of weeks worth of events?
