Oh what a feeling: Toyota issues massive recall

Discussion in 'Sports and News' started by murphyc, Jan 27, 2010.

  1. Saw a cartoon today in which a guy was pulled over and the cop was telling him that the accelerator sticking was only an excuse in Toyotas. I laughed.

Toyota quality has gone downhill since the days of your RAV4, and not just all the stuff that's coming out now. I've had a number of Toyota rentals over the years and there are a handful in the extended family. The 1990s ones felt much more solid than the newer ones; it's pretty evident they've cut costs over the past decade or so.

Newly recalled: 437K Priuses and other hybrids (brake software) and 7,300 Camrys from the early part of the 2010 model run (leaky brakes).

Now under federal review: Possible steering issue in the 2009-10 Corolla.

Call me crazy, but I wouldn't hesitate to buy another Toyota.

This is bad and it's going to hurt them a lot, but like Old Tony, I have a 10-year-old Toyota that has 180K miles on it and still runs great.

What? A suggestion that things aren't on the up-and-up in D.C.? Never saw that one coming.

State Farm warned NHTSA about Toyotas' unexpected acceleration in 2007.

Now I have to go find the Honda thread. Fair, balanced and all that jazz . . .

    From another site:

Alanis just TWITTERED her new lyrics!

You bought a hybrid Prius to make a green statement
When you try to brake, it accelerates
    It seems taboo
    To say the throttle stuck
    As you crash into
    A tanker truck
    Isn't it ironic
    Don't you think?

    I have 270,000 miles on a 1990 Lexus.***

    But that's not the point.

The problem is with quality control and cost-cutting on newer Toyotas.

I might still buy one, but I would definitely hesitate. Why wouldn't I, if I can get a Civic or Accord or Altima or Mazda6 that doesn't have an issue with recalls?

Of course, it would be nice if all this caused Toyota prices to drop. But we'll see.

*** I think. Odometer broke at 214,000 3 years ago.

I believe I saw a similar story from Washington state last week, a family suing for access to the black box from their son's Toyota pickup.
