    I would be shocked if he's there on a trip. Afghanistan is not a swing state.

    If he went just for diplomacy, it's a wasted opportunity. A great Bush moment (I'll concede there weren't as many as I would have liked) was when he surprised the troops (Thanksgiving, I think). Obama could have done something similar on his way - maybe he still will.

    Since he's making a speech in 3 hours from Bagram, it appears that he's spening some time with the troops.

    His time with troops:

    "We're going to keep you here, at least through November. We just can't have any more news stories about unemployed veterans trying to feed their kids between now and the election. That cool with you?".

    Sounds about right.

    At least when the previous president went over for a surprise visit at Thanksgiving he wasn't whoring for votes in an election cycle.
