Romenesko has the entire agreement. I see no provision distinguishing whether the employee terminates employment or the employer does.

Wow, and that attached email says the deadline is today. I honestly don't know what I would do in that situation, especially since I'm not one who would want to move away and out of the competition zone. But if the alternative to not signing is sacrificing your job? Ugh.

From what the memo says about the "town hall" meeting, maybe the employees were all set to give Halifax a giant "Fuck you" and refuse to sign it, leaving the executives the task of putting out the paper themselves.

It's still a bullshit move for the new employees, but as long as they are told of the non-compete before they go to work for Halifax, then at least they will know what they are getting into, unlike the current employees, who were blindsided.

Well, there are plenty of people in journalism who sign non-competes. NFL Network has one. SI has one. I'm not sure if ESPN does. But the guy working at a small paper in Florida making around $30K a year should never, under any circumstances, be required to sign one.

    It's a bully tactic.

According to Poynter and the Wall Street Journal, Halifax is now in talks with Freedom for its papers in California and the Florida panhandle. Not surprising, considering that Daytona's editor used to be the editor of one of Freedom's panhandle papers.
