Of recent vintage, the NBC contract (which was a huge deal at the time) and the sanctimony/hypocrisy regarding their "student-athletes" ranks very high. Plus Charlie Weis made them so, so easy to hate.

I believe it was four Heismans for Powlus.

Kansas State should have dropped a lot farther than that. You can't be a top-10 team and get dunptrucked by someone below .500.

I never understood why everyone was so bitter about the Powlus thing. The last laugh was on Notre Dame.

So ignore the other 10 games?

Not to mention the many recruits who earned an extra star just because ND decided to recruit them.
Generally it is the way ND is shoved down people's throats like there is something wrong with you if you don't bow down to the Irish as the last "honest" program in the country (outside of Army and Navy of course).

When they lose - it is proof that they won't compromise their ideals. How admirable.
When they win - it is proof that you can have a competitive program with rigorous academics. Why can't other schools.

Of course - in the last 20 years Stanford has proven this with more success and no scandals (and I hate typing that, Cal guy that I am).

Powlus made the SI cover after his first game. Or maybe it was Mirer...maybe both.

It was Mirer (Sept. 24, 1990). And it was actually after his first start as a sophomore (he'd backed up Tony Rice in 1989):

Powlus' SI cover came before his senior season of 1996:
