How is trotting out nude athletes for a magazine spread credible? For either a magazine (that, you know, has writers who cover said athletes) or the athletes, like Danica, whose sole claim to fame is a (semi) hot body and marrying a perv of a husband?
Yes, SI does a swimsuit issue, with models, not athletes.
This is the wrong direction to go in..

I agree with the others, wake me up with Playboy, though that's not happening. Danica has made no secret over the years that she's comfortable in her body and enjoys having it photographed, but in no way that would make her younger fans embarrassed to be her fans. Since young people see so much today, so to speak, compared to decades ago, I don't think she has gone over the line yet. Maybe close to it, but not over it.

I think much less of ESPN here. The Mag has always been in the back pocket of athletes, but this is taking the admiration to a different level, and for a cheap cash grab. Sure, one could argue that the Swimsuit issue is the same thing, especially since it has branched out into photographing athletes' spouses, but SI was at least first to this party a long time ago. I think it's tough to be No. 2 and not be vilified for it.

I sold or threw out a ton of old Playboys recently, but that was one of the few issues I kept.

From her standpoint, there's nothing wrong with it. She's an athlete who will benefit from some publicity.

From ESPN's standpoint, it's pretty embarrassing.

I couldn't find the news source where I first read it. This is the best I can do, but the Arizona and PA claims are true and accurate with records to verify.

As you wish ...

For starters, Danica met her husband, Paul Hospenthal, when he was 40 and she was 24. He was her physical therapist treating her for an injury sustained in a yoga class. Yes, I did say yoga class, not in her race car.

Now, this is where it gets good! According to an article I found on azfamily.com (an Arizona news channel’s site), a woman claimed she and Hospenthal had a sexual relationship years ago while she was his patient and just 16 years old. She also claimed the two had a consensual sexual relationship nine years ago and that they had sex at least once in his office.

Hospenthal’s defense is “bad judgment.” You think? Hope he didn’t pay a ton in legal fees for that defense strategy.

He admits to have taken the girl to his home a couple of times, have her clean his house and help her with homework. Being a little accident-prone myself, I have been to many physical therapists, and I have never once had to go clean one’s house as part of my “therapy.”

In the end, the Arizona State Board of Physical Therapists agreed, unanimously siding with her and punishing him. He was put on probation, and didn’t bother to even try to appeal.

Now, my dear readers, the story does not end there. Under the Pennsylvania Department of State Health Licensing Boards Disciplinary Actions in October 2007, the story continues.

“Paul E. Hospenthal, license no. PT001940E of Scottsdale, Ariz., agreed to a permanent, voluntary surrender of his license because he had a license disciplined by the proper licensing authority of another state.” (09-27-07) So, now no longer on probation, he has no license.

Then, to add more soap to the opera, “The Board then discussed ordering Mr. Hospenthal to submit to a psycho-sexual evaluation. The motion carried by a unanimous roll call vote.” Wow, when the whole Pennsylvania State Board thinks you need a psycho-sexual evaluation, you would think it would be hard to get a date, much less marry an IRL star.

However, it seems old Paul using his patient charts as a dating manual wasn’t a one-time incident. In the Arizona State Board of Physical Therapy records, there is another complaint that in 2000 he seduced another woman while she was his physical therapy patient and that they had a consensual sexual relationship for four years during which time she “periodically received physical therapy care from Mr. Hospenthal both in and out of his clinic.”

The complaint was later dismissed, but let’s just think about it for a minute. He “allegedly” seduces a 16 yr old patient, is ordered to take a psycho-sexual evaluation, then is accused of a three year relationship with another female patient he “seduced.” Then he still manages to marry Danica, another previous patient who is 16 years his junior. Seriously, it doesn’t take Scooby Doo to figure out the mystery that this is one man you don’t want to send your daughter or wife to for treatment.
