Before the Golden Age of liability and YouTube, we had a 10-meter platform at the town pool where I grew up, and kids routinely jumped off it by the age of 10 or so. We also jumped off roofs, into deep quarries, and off the since-replaced Rt. 26 drawbridge to Highlands Beach. Kids will do anything.

I don’t recall having a choice. They hooked me in by my feet facing forward and that was it. Of course, I was terrified so memory might not be reliable.

I do remember getting ready to back out. Clinging to the pole as I stood on the plank. Then I just went blank and ran straight off into a Superman dive.

I’m sure it wasn’t close, but it felt like I could almost touch the river before being sprung back up. And it also felt like I was going back up so fast I was gonna hit the bridge.

I could walk out on that... but just looking at the picture gives me a bad feeling in my belly.
