It might be that people are too worried they are going to die to worry about getting a new TV.

And maybe that Japanese are too rigid to see the opportunity amidst the tragedy.

Tell that to the tens of millions of Chinese, Koreans and Filipinos the Japanese killed during their occupation of East Asia.

It is indeed. Just to illustrate, here's some numbers I just picked up off the google:

    Robbery/Violent Theft per 100,000:

    United States 169.02
    Japan 2.71

    Murders per 100,000:

    United States 6.32
    Japan 0.58

    Rapes per 100,000:

    United States 34.20
    Japan 1.48

    Serious Assault per 100,000:

    United States 357.94
    Japan 15.40

And Japan does this with little police presence. They've got one of lower police per capita ratios in the world, and the cops you do see generally won't be carrying guns and aren't exactly intimidating. They've got a society that's largely been able to police themselves, even in enormously crowded cities where tens of millions are packed in one urban area. It is kind of remarkable.

The Japanese also during World War II had a very different view of being taken prisoner in battle. They considered it a great disgrace. That's part of the reason they treated prisoners so poorly.

Whatever the reasons, it goes beyond just how they treated prisoners.

Japan is country that was responsible for the Rape of Nanking. You can't just begin the discussion two weeks ago, as Poindexter wants to, and make broad generalizations about their superior character and integrity.

There are clearly cultural differences and they make for fascinating discussion.

But the Japanese -- like everyone else -- are pretty damned human: they have a long history of good and bad.

The lack of looting could also have something to do with the need to stay indoors, in airtight living quarters, or risk death by breathing the air. Could be connected.

There is likely a difference between "bad" acts against others (Fililpinos, Koreans, Chinese, and Americans) and "bad" acts against fellow Japanese.

You know those "bad acts against others" occurred over 70 years ago, and nobody involved is around today. I'm not sure how relevant that is to this thread topic.

I much prefer the time honored "grab it while you can" philosophy in the USA.

It provides much better photo ops.

My mom is. You want to tell her that it doesn't matter today?
