No Gomer at the Indy 500

Jim Nabors is apparently ill and unable to make the trip to Indy to sing "Indiana." (The official title of the song known as "Back Home Again in Indiana.")

As corny as it sounds, the prerace buildup won't be the same without him. Maybe it's because when everything else at Indy has been chaotic, you could count on Gomer showing up to sing. Shoot, he even showed up a few months after a liver transplant once.

    That's too bad.

Hope you get to feeling better, Private Pyle.

    Well gooooooolllllllllyyyyy!

I noticed that AP sent a long feature on the tradition of him singing at Indy, including a separate info box on the words to the song. Guess not many papers will be running that one.

Get well soon. His appearance always marked the start of summer and Jerry Lewis' the end.

Well, at least Carol Brady will be singing God Bless America.
But Indy without Gomer is a shame.

What's up with Indy? Gomer Pyle, Carol Brady? Who else, The Hoff?

Somehow, Indy will dredge up someone even more square than Jim Nabors to sing the song.

"Now for Back Home Again In Indiana, replacing an ill Jim Nabors are the Duke cousins that replaced Bo and Luke from Dukes Of Hazzard fame! Give these huge stars a Speedway welcome!"

Seriously, I'll admit it isn't the same to hear that song without Nabors, but Indy's traditions are so staid.
