    Back then, the candidates didn't attend the conventions. It wasn't considered dignified. Rather, the candidate's supporters would go there, and try to influence the delegates in their vote. It'd take several rounds (at least) of ballots to get a nominee.

    Abe also had the reputation as a pretty good wrestler. His big move was the Honest Hammer, set up by the Mary Todd Facepalm :)

    I lost a lot of respect for Abe as a wrestler when he gave Stephen Douglas a "Railsplitter" when the ref's back was turned.
