Who is it?

  1. Ryan Howard (incredible second half, but 2 HRs and 11 RBI in final 21 games as Phils died)

    19 vote(s)
    57.6%
  2. Albert Pujols (Many numbers pale with Howard's, but he had a huge finish)

    14 vote(s)
    42.4%

Howard will probably flame out somewhere down the road, but I agree with all of the above. For this year, he's the man.

Flame out? Not so sure, having followed his longer-than-it-should-have-been career in the minors. He will however, continue to get the Bonds treatment next season. I don't think you'll see another 58-homer season out of him. It took pitchers until late in the season to quit throwing to him.

That's something that I couldn't understand. Why he got the pitches he got for as long as he got 'em astounds me.

Howard makes Carlos Delgado look like Keith Hernandez at first, but I know, that doesn't count either.

    Doesn't work into the equation.

And the disregard of hitting .421 with 5 HRs the final 20 games, and hitting THE HR that advances your team to the postseason.

Incredible hypocrisy, just so you can disagree with me.

If YOU didn't get it... and I have respected your takes on baseball... then I am simply above your pay grade on this one.

    The argument makes itself.

    Baseball reference's stats are up:

Adjusted OPS+ totals, which accounts for ballpark effects:

    Pujols 180
    Howard 170

No one else is above 161.

Pujols was the best offensive player in baseball this year by this measure and he's better in every other phase of the game than Howard. Pujols won't win MVP, but he should.

p.s. I know anti-stats people will hate this post.

    Mustard loves his stats, though.

jag, the only stat that affected anything on this thread was my vote going with Pujols.

Otherwise, these people are just insane.
