Yeah, Oswalt, Webb and Carpenter are real stiffs.

I can't believe Hoffman got 12 votes. That's 12 people who should never be allowed to vote again.

Good gravy, it's not like they voted for Joe Niekro's Decomposing Body (which probably can still fire off the knuckler better than Wakefield on a down day). My hypothetical let's pretend vote went to Oswalt, but why all the drama because a very good closer got some Cy-ideration?

Hell, I thought Hoffman should have won. But I thought Oswalt was a better choice than Webb, so what do I know.

  5. Um, there's more to Webb than wins:

    Wins -- 1
    ERA -- 3
    ERA+ -- 1
    IP -- 2
    WHIP -- 2
    Ks -- 10
    CGs -- 2
    Shutouts -- 1
    BB/9 -- 7

Hoffman only threw 63 innings of non-Gagne-caliber ball. He already won the award for that kind of stuff (The Rolaids Relief).

    Yep.

If you're going to be the best pitcher in the league throwing 10 innings a month, you better be lights out. Hoffman was just good. He didn't even strike out a batter an inning and his WHIP was around 1. There were starters with better numbers and a much heavier workload.

This should have been the end of the argument.

And the whole "Rice isn't in the HOF because writers hate him" is the biggest crock of shit ever. I guess Columbo doesn''t remember the whole "Gary Carter isn't in the HOF because he kissed too much ass" argument.

Carter probably shouldn't be in the HOF. Rice most surely should not.

I don't know what incenses me more Hoffman second, or Oswalt not first.

It must bug you, Columbo, with your unyielding intellect and perfect nature, that you don't cover baseball, where you could teach those dopes how to do the shit right.
