This was mentioned on the NHL offseason thread, but any extra exposure for this topic is OK by me.

 

The title of this thread should be "NHL groveling to ESPN"

 

Whatever it takes. The NHL needs ESPN. Badly.

And hopefully, the dick-for-brains who gave Versus exclusive cable rights in this contract is no longer employed by the NHL, or any other business entity for that matter.

 

They'll get the contract and then Dick For Brains Bettman will decide the new CBA salary cap isn't working and will shut down the league again.

The NHL needs two things: ESPN and fighting. I love the game without the fighting, but no one in the general population gives a shit about it if there isnt an occasional throw-down.

 

The only evidence you need that NHL needs ESPN: The overboard run-up to the NASCAR race in Indianapolis and the over-the-top postrace coverage, particularly compared to the coverage the same race got a year ago when it wasn't televised by ESPN.

 

I don't care if the NHL has to pay ESPN. The fucking league needs to be on ESPN. The current TV deal is batshit insane.
