    I think this is bad for the sport.

    Football has an intractable problem. It's a dangerous sport to play -- in terms of short-term injury and longer-term trauma. That is driving people away; youth football participation rates are in the tank.

    I don't think the way to deal with the growing perception that football is dangerous, is via rules changes like this that fundamentally change the game. All you get is a watered down version of football that really isn't much safer. At a certain point, people have to accept that playing football is dangerous -- and that the players who do it, make a choice. If most people aren't on board with that, its popularity is going to keep declining. There is nothing the NFL can do about that. But I do think that rules changes like this are starting to annoy more fans than it keeps in the fold -- the only thing moderately interesting about a field goal or extra point is when someone blocks one.
