I can see one very positive possibility out of this: Unions like the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers also do double duty as hiring halls, matching up workers with jobs. It would be great to see the Guild (or another labor group, given that in my experience the Guild's always seemed sort of useless) adopt a similar role.

Yes it would. And long overdue.

Really cool. Not to mention the discounts for being a member, which is free.

5 percent off of any purchase at Barnes and Noble
10-20 percent off select items at Staples
10 percent off monthly bill at TMobile/ plus phone discounts

I'll take my small victories where I can get them.

The Guild, if it gets involved, had better get used to the idea of collecting cut-rate dues, in proportion to its freelancing members' cut-rate incomes.

Or do what the government does and take an increasingly bigger slice from those journalists with full-time jobs and salaries to subsidize those at the low end of the earning scale. ;D

The UAW made the middle class. It's up to his journalists to reinvent it, right?
