Newsday eliminates Powell, Howard

    Howard did not reject. Because of a technicality, she did not have the option of staying on at another job class.

    Columnists are the most endangered in the current media climate because so many of them do little or no reporting. We live in a media world in which anyone can blog about their opinions and very few columnists are such great writers that they're "must" reads. The people with the best job security are the journalists who report, develop sources and break news.

    Wow. I think anyone who worked with Powell or Howard would say they were both reporting columnists. Didn't seem to offer them any more job security.

    To your point cranberry, I'd say that a lot of columnists skate by on rants. But doesn't apply here.

    Agree -- the comment was meant to be general -- not aimed at Powell or Howard.
