    JournalismJobs.com - Job Listing - News/Sports writer

Wanted: A news/sports writer whose primary duties will be covering local high school community college and youth sports. Are you a person who treats community sports like professional sports? Are you capable of treating little league players like All-Star champions, win or lose? The Taft Midway Driller is looking for a sports writer/photographer and self-described “sports nut” who can do just that. The qualified person will help cover two school districts, a community college, recreation and parks district, youth sports like Pop Warner football, Little League, AYSO and more.

We’re looking for a Jack/Jill-of-all-trades who is capable of photographing and reporting. Pagination/page design skills on Quark Xpress are preferred, but will train the right candidate. Photography skills and knowledge of Associated Press style are musts.

The Taft Midway Driller is a twice-weekly newspaper located in southwest Kern County. The position is 35 hours per week, up to $12 per hour (DOE) and offers matching 401(K), health, vision and dental insurance.

Please send resume, cover letter, 3-5 writing clips, and any photography and/or design samples to Publisher John Watkins, jwatkins@ridgecrestca.com and Editor Doug Keeler at dkeeler@taftmidwaydriller.com. No phone calls please.

Good sports town for its size.
The writer who had this job for the past 12 years or so died suddenly a couple of weeks ago. Still not sure exactly what happened.

Gatehouse paper. As if the salary listed wasn't a giveaway. Really an isolated city in western Kern County. Nearest big burgs are Bakersfield and Fresno.

Saw something on Twitter last night about a moment of silence for the writer before the game, but nothing on the paper's web site. Curious.

Taft used to get its ass kicked by Bakersfield until Reno Hightower came along.

And the sonovabitch dropped the ball.
