  2. Regardless of the position, potential applicants to this paper should know that the higher-ups censor the product to make certain nothing is seen as too mean to the University of South Carolina.

Its columnist, Ron Morris, was told a few months ago that he's no longer allowed to write anything critical of the athletic program. Any time he wants to write an opinion piece about it at all, it must be approved by the executive editor, to make sure no one might get mad. Seriously. You might remember Morris from past dust-ups with Steve Spurrier, who said on the radio last year that he would see to it there would be changes made at the newspaper because of critical columns from Morris.

And, sure enough, the paper sided with Spurrier and the athletic department, neutering its only sports voice and an employee there for more than a decade.

So in this case, if a design or headline hurts the feelings at those at the university, be prepared that the paper not only won't protect you, it'll be the one throwing you to the wolves.
