What about central New Jersey, like in Monmouth County? There's lots of people, lots of money and Asbury Park is 66 miles from Yankee Stadium and 68 from Citi Field. A ballpark off the boardwalk would be pretty cool. :D

It could but there is also a lot of baseball fans that don't want to drop $500 to take their family of 4 to the Bronx.

Could you draw a base of fans to a new team based on better economics. Biggest problem would be creating a viable tv network.

it's useless to discuss the 50-mile radius barrier as a bright line rule. if the powers that be decide the ny/nj/ct area could use a third team, they will alter the rules to fit their needs, whether by expansion or relocation.

    And how far from Philadelphia?
The Phils have a Double A team in Lakewood.
And there is not nearly as much money in Monmouth/Ocean Counties as there is the Bergen/Passaic/Morris/Essex etc in the North.
Plus, the Jersey Shore is not cnsidered the New York market.

Wow. Did the Yankees drop their prices that low?

At that time, major league baseball hadn't expanded westward past Missouri.

Completely different time, and a different economy.

Granted, it's the NHL, so take it for what it's worth, but they're struggling with three teams in the same area right now. Devils nearly moved to Nashville in the 90s and the Islanders are making noise about relocation.

I can't see how three MLB teams would work, either. In the 50s, the Giants were struggling (financially) due to the Polo Grounds falling apart and they were set to move anyways. O'Malley didn't get his stadium, and got a sweetheart deal in LA, so he decided to move, and asked the Giants to move anyways. Even if O'Malley got the stadium, there would still have been only two teams, as the Giants were moving to Minnesota.

If NY wasn't equipped to enter the 60s with three teams, they sure aren't equipped, now.

I hope somebody from North Jersey buys the Rangers and moves them the hell outta here. I'd love to have a NL team in Dallas replace them.

Oh, you like the idea of seeing a bunch of minor-league teams visiting Dallas metro?

Better them visiting than in residence for 81 games because that's all your broke-ass owner can afford to pay.
