Posting this more for the novelty aspect than anything, since it's a college internship. Some of our younger members might be interested, though.
That they provide a room and transportation to and from Skagway is nice.

Props to editor Elise Giordano for that complete account of what you face in Skagway. A couple comments from a certified Alaska fanboi:

    • The paper's offer to cover transportation is a huge plus. If you have the time, take the offer to pay for a ferry ride from Bellingham, Wash. You can bring your own car to Skagway (if you have one) and have an interesting 3-day ride up the Pacific coast, with beautiful sights along the shores and interesting characters aboard the state ferry.

    • She's not exaggerating about the number of cruise ship tourists. It's insane when four huge cruise ships are docked and thousands of their passengers descend on a town of 1,000 people. On the plus side ... Skagway must import a ton of college-age workers each summer to deal with this throng, so the social opportunities would be much better than your average small town.

    • The outdoorsy opportunities are another big plus, provided you like hiking, fishing, etc. The lakes pictured on Batman's link are not too far outside of town and are a nice getaway from the tourists packed on the main drag.

If I were a college student, I would jump all over this opportunity!
