New York Times Knicks/NBA writer

Discussion in 'Journalism Jobs' started by Left_Coast, May 24, 2007.

  1. You'd have a shot at getting a job at a large paper. However, it'd be tough to break in to covering the NBA for the NYTimes without any NBA contacts.

Marc Spears, anyone? He's an excellent NBA writer with great contacts. Think he'd go from being NBA writer back to beat writer?

One of the best NBA reporters around... Does an outstanding job. He'd be a great hire.

If I were them I would try to pry Dave D. away from Newark. Writes with a lot of flair, knows the NBA as well as anyone. Can even write seriously when appropriate.

Take the buyout package they're offering, land at the N.Y. Times. Wouldn't be a bad move at all.

People, this is the New York Times we're talking about here. Of COURSE they're going to hire a female.

No, Brubaker came to the Post from SI. Too bad -- I like heraldchick's version better.

Really? The last hire for this position was a white male. They'll hire the best person.

It looks like Bill Brubaker went from the Miami News ---- where he did preps but maybe other stuff, too ---- to Sports Illustrated to the Washington Post. Not bad, either. The following is from WashPost Web site: Bill came to The Post in 1985 from Sports Illustrated in New York, where he was an investigative reporter. He has been a staff writer in The Post's Sports and Financial sections, and won more than 35 journalism awards during a career that began as a parttime sports broadcaster in Miami, Fla. Bill's work twice has been nominated by The Post for the Pulitzer Prize.

From what i hear, Izzy was just waiting for this job to become open, which is why he turned down the Mets job a few years ago. And for those wondering about preps, the Times hired Ben Schpigel, who was doing preps and recruiting for the SportsDay extravaganza, then moved to features for a few months before leaving.
