Well, if mustang's numbers are correct, 10 paid days is 3.84 percent.

So if they're taking a 5 percent pay cut but getting 3.84 "back" via paid vacation, the company is still cutting costs by 1.16 percent. And that doesn't even count some intangible benefits for the company -- such as, like clutch said, that extra productivity they get from people checking e-mails, making phone calls, etc., while on "vacation."

Also doesn't count whatever other cost-cutting measures they might be taking.

It's the intangibles way more than that 1.16 percent math.

Such as people who will cram work into the week before their extra vacation and tackle the work waiting for them when they get back. Such as the workload that will shift to other people, who absorb it while some are taking their 10 days off. The paper will still get published, showing little apparent drop in quantity or quality while people are absent an extra 10 days.

Meanwhile, the 5 percent pay cuts keep on keeping on, every week, every day, every hour.

NYT to whack the City section; Friday's Escapes section and regional weekly sections for Long Island, Connecticut, Westchester and New Jersey may also be on the butcher's block. Newsroom staffer tells the New York Observer that the City section has four issues left.

Post reports previously-known request that union employees take the 5 percent pay cut and throws in at the bottom that the Sunday Metro section is also on the butcher's block.
