Hoboken is great if you know where you are going. Jersey City is the same as well.

In NYC, well, if you want the best Chinese food, you go out to Flushing, Queens.

If you are into this sort of thing and want to do something "cool," there is a Buddhist Temple at the East end of Canal. It isn't very big but it is different for those that never see such a thing.

St. Patrick's is pretty massive as well. A little touristy though.

One of my favorite NY stories...

Followijng his passing a public veiwing in St. Patrick's for Billy Martin, and a friend of mine went there to pay his respects. There were thousands of New Yorkers coming in, and Steve took a seat in a pew. As he is looking around, mind you it is all very quiet in the place, he sees The Boss come in and take a seat a few seats over from him.

After a little while, he starts to hear this low whispering voice in a very think NY accent start trying to get The Boss's attention.

    "George, George."

"George, what are you going to do about the bullpen this year George?"

"You should have signed Mark Davis."

    and again

"George, what are you going to do about the bullpen this year George?"

The Boss got up and left.

    I love New York.

Frank Costanza: What the hell did you trade Jay Buhner for?! He had 30 home runs and over 100 RBIs last year. He's got a rocket for an arm. You don't know what the hell you're doin'!

Steinbrenner: Well, Buhner was a good prospect, no question about it. But my baseball people loved Ken Phelps' bat. They kept saying "Ken Phelps, Ken Phelps."

Go the Metroploitan Museum of Art, go to the Hayden Planetarium, walk through Central Park (during the day). Go see a Broadway Show or 2, expensive but DO IT. Wait on line at TCKTS, a twofer place, think it's still at Times Square.
Walk through China Town and SoHo.

Go tot he NYTimes web site and go over the restuarant reviews of the past 6 months, puck a couple and then get reservations immediately. If you are staying a a good hotel, call the concierge NOW and have them make the reservations. Make sure to tip as soon as you get them to confirm your reservation on arrival.

Walk thru the Time Warner Building on Columbus Circle, if you've got 400 dollars to kill and like sushi, get a reservation at Per Se.

Go to the Carnegie Deli for a corned beef sandwich.

Go To El Quijote for dinner, it's right next to the Chelsea Hotel. A GREAT spanish restuarant. Have the green shrimp. Walk around Chelsea one afternoon then eat there.
    226 West 23rd Street

DO NOT EVER EAT IN A CHAIN RESTUARANT.

If money is no object, take a carriage ride thru the park, but avoid Kramer.

Walk over the Brooklyn Bridge got to Peter Lugers for Steak
    178 Broadway
    Brooklyn, N.Y. 11211
take a cab back to the hotel.

Take the Staten Island Ferry ride for sure...the Circle Line full trip around Manhattan Island also is great...took it 2 years ago and learend stuff I never knew about the city.

Ellis Island is a fascinating place as well...ferry from Battery Park, right near to SI Ferry terminal.

And take a few hours to just walk around Central Park .. you'll forget you're in one of the busiest cities in the world.

If you do go to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, try to get to the rooftop cafe (it might be a members only thing, I'm not sure) overlooking Central Park...spectacular view and $10 martinis. (wine and beer only $8)

Out of the way restaurant: Cafe du Bruxelles on 14th Street... small, noisy, excellent food (pommes frites in a tin cup!), Belgian beer.

Last time HC and I were in New York we took the Staten Island Ferry--it's great. Afterwards we walked up to Ground Zero and then up to the Village.

    Central Park is a must.

And go have a drink at the King Cole Bar in the St. Regis Hotel. New York Landmark.

The Guggenheim should be on your list.

Did you yell curse words at the Statue of Liberty as the ferry went by? ;D

  11. Metropolitan Museum, Metropolitan Opera, MoMA, the Oyster Bar in Grand Central Station, the Top of the Rock for a view of the city (instead of the Empire State Building), Statue of Liberty via Circle Line, New York Public Library (and Nat Sherman's cigar store across the street), TKTS for half-price tickets to a Broadway show, Yankee Stadium before the 97 year old "Voice of God" finally buys it.

Union Square Cafe is an excellent but unstuffy Italian-influenced restaurant, consistently rated among the city's best, and not devastatingly expensive like Per Se or cash only like Peter Luger (although you should still go to Peter Luger's). Black button down shirt and a decent pair of jeans & shoes will do fine there.
