He wasn't really. It's not like her referred to himself as such.

There's a section on the About page where I explain the name: Writing and letters to family | The Big Dog has the Floor

Short answer is someone gave him a shirt that had that expression on it with a graphic.
I liked it as a reference to his ability and proclivity to hold forth and to command a room.
He tended to dominate all conversation.

The style reminds me a little of Jean Shepherd. Good stuff.

 

The letter about not attending the Snowball Dance is very much his normal writing voice, which makes the letter about the loin of pork all the funnier to me.
