Pam Siddall, a Phenix City, Ala., native who has spent the past two years as publisher of The Wichita Eagle in Kansas, is the new president and publisher of The Birmingham News.

Pam Siddall.jpgPhenix City native Pam Siddall has been named publisher of The Birmingham News.Siddall will begin work in Birmingham on Jan. 11, said Ricky Mathews, president of Advance Alabama/Mississippi newspapers. The group includes The News and The Huntsville Times, as well as The Mississippi Press in Pascagoula and the Press-Register in Mobile, where Mathews serves as president and publisher.

Siddall succeeds Victor Hanson III, who retired as president and publisher of The News at the end of November.
Siddall, 41, is a summa cum laude graduate of Columbus State University in Columbus, Ga. She began her newspaper career as chief financial officer at the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer. She worked as CFO and vice president at The Macon (Ga.) Telegraph, then returned to the Ledger-Enquirer as vice president and general manager. She served as president and publisher of the Columbus paper for more than three years before being named president and publisher of The Wichita Eagle in November of 2007.

it doesn't matter. everybody will have taken buyouts by the time she's on board instead of waiting around to be laid off.

I'm told by someone who works there the publisher of the Huntsville Times turns 62 in April and this is his 30th year with Newhouse. Says the current pub recently opted NOT to re-up his company-paid membership to the North Alabama's most elite country club.

Will be real interesting to see if that position gets filled if/when he retires or if the new overlord on the Gulf Coast tries to run a paper at the opposite end of the state.

A company-paid country club membership amid budget cuts and staff reductions through buyouts?

    Nice.

But, but, if you don't offer the country club membership, no one will want the job!
