New laptop or just a CD drive?

My laptop's CD player is dead. The computer has several other small problems (gets really hot sometimes, AC jack is loose). I'm trying to decide if I should go out and buy some cheap new one (there's a Toshiba on sale at the big boxes for around $500, and this weekend is tax-free back to school shopping in this area) or just get a new external CD/DVD player to attach to the old one whenever I need to use one, which isn't often.

I'm just afraid this one is going to break down completely soon, and I'll be kicking myself for skipping the tax-free weekend.

Anybody have any suggestions one way or another -- new computer or CD player?

Also, unless said laptop is new enough to support booting off USB, an external would leave you with no way to boot it if you had hard drive problems.

I agree with everybody else. Buy a new one.
