And don't rely on purchasing water ffs , turn on the tap, fill jugs for drinking and bins for other uses.

Fill the tub. You can boil it for drinking or use it to flush.

One of the stupidest things I have seen, during last years storms, people fretting about water sold out BEFORE the storm. We are so conditioned!

Screw that. Hit Home Depot and buy a couple of five gallon plastic jugs. Paying a buck for a little bottle of water never fails to piss me off. Paying $4 for one at a football game... what I'm muttering as I head back to my seat isn't fit for people to hear.

If you get in a real bind, there’s 30-50 gallons of potable water available in the water heater, accessible through the drain valve at the bottom of the tank. It might help the flow if you open a nearby hot water tap to break the vacuum. You probably want to turn the breaker off if it’s electric and make sure that it has refilled before you turn it back on.

Just went to a Kroger in RVA for my usual grocery shopping. Bottled water is already sold out. Crazy. Plenty of bread and milk for those all important milk sammiches tho.

    Re: water

Go to a local outdoors store and buy one these ...

LifeStraw - Water filters & purifiers for every ocassion

They also have them at places like Bass Pro, Academy Sports, etc.

I've used mine to drink out of muddy puddles in the backcountry and didn't get sick from it.

Two added things: Make sure you have your most valuable papers put in a safe spot, or keep them in your car for when you evacuate. Papers like homeowners or renters insurance, bank documents, etc.

You don't want to have to deal with an insurer who suddenly "forgets" you have coverage for certain items.

Also, pack a few of your most sentimental things, like photos.

    Be safe everyone.

Saw on my Twittas feed that the USN is sending the Norfolk fleet out to sea ASAP. Yikes.
