It just hit the 500 million user mark, so unless someone hacks it so that all pages show child porn, I can't see it myspacing in five years.

Eventually the growth will slow and stop, and the people leaving will outnumber the people starting up, but I think it would take something cataclysmic to bring about a demise that immediate.

I'm not on Facebook because I don't want to deal with folks with whom I've successfully lost contact.

But it's becoming increasingly obvious that I'm missing out on professional contacts, etc., so I might have to give in and create an account.

What I've noticed among folks I know who are on Facebook is that they seem to be pretty darned proud of their number of "friends," whether or not they really even know them.

I know a priest who bragged about how many friends he had.

I just unfriended 25 people. I doubt any of them will notice.

How does one go about "unfriending" someone?

If you go to the person's profile page, there will be a link that says remove friend.

I honestly use Facebook to a) play Scrabble and b) post stupid song lyrics.

There's always LinkedIn for professional contacts. You get some of the connectability you want without the inane Farmville or Mafia Wars updates.

I don't make a big deal of the number of friends I have because well over 100 of them are there because of one of the games I play that requires you to actually be on the friends list of the person you play with to get different perks.

What I love about Facebook is the ability to connect with the people you want to. If there are people you don't want seeing certain parts of your profile, you can create groups and restrict access to those groups. That's what I do.
