    From The Pipeline:

Buyouts offered at Nashua Telegraph. Layoffs pending?

A friend faxed me a memo circulated around The Telegraph newsroom with last week's paychecks.

In it, the publisher regrets to inform everyone that because the company "continues to be battered by the combination of the changing newspaper business and the difficult economy," and that "revenue has continued its slump in key categories of classified and preprint advertising," that voluntary buyouts are now being offered.

The buyout deal: "Lump-sum payments equivalent to two week's pay for each year worked up to a maximum of 20 weeks are available."

Employees have to decide by Sept. 15 and will be out the door by Sept. 20.

The best line of the memo: "We hope that enough people will take advantage of these offers so that we can avoid involuntary staff-reduction measures."

20 weeks? How generous of them.

  4. there are some blood-suckers at the top of the pyramid that need to go.

i'm looking at you, solomon and pappas.

unfortunately, a bunch of good people on the bottom end, including folks in sports, will get bent over.

to those in the know...was a target number mentioned for buyouts/layoffs?
