i'm a nascar scene subscriber for several years who had already paid for a 2010 subscription

needless to say this was pretty disappointing news to hear

I contacted scene and they confirmed over the phone that scene is done (at least in print)

Subscribers are getting a letter offering either a refund for 2010 subscriptions OR the credit can be used for a years worth of nascar illustrated

I like the content in scene and don't see how a monthly publication can fill that void.

Very upset personally and i really feel for the people who got laid off. Sounds like they were kinda treated like crap in the end

    no nascar scene :(

Some 'leaders' listen too closely to their HR and legal recommendations instead of having a heart to do the right thing.

Trusted, valued employees? Please wait to be escorted from the building.

Ryan McGee of The ESPN Hegemony penned an excellent blog item about the executions in Charlotte.

The comments on that story are off and running:

"Give all those guys their job back and then you'll have your award winning staff. You screwed a lot of good journalists. Big business, just like the sport your writing about."

Tom Jensen (who wrote this excellent tribute to the Scene, BTW) should get some kind of recognition for what he did tonight, so here it is.

Bunch of ex-Scene staffers get together at a Charlotte restaurant (with erstwhile SportsJournalists.commer Jeff Gluck practically live-tweeting it, of course). Jensen asks Gluck (via Twitter) which restaurant they were at.

Then he calls the restaurant without telling anybody . . . shortly thereafter, Gluck tweets, "This is incredible, but thanks to @tomjensen100, we only owe $3.07 apiece...and that includes the tip!!!! I want to hug Tom Jensen right now"

Except they were planning to dine and dash, so that meant they had to pay $3.07 more than they expected.

Just saw a Jeff Gluck tweet that he's agreed in principle to a new job. Good for him, and I hope the rest of the staffers can rebound soon.

From what I know of Tom, this doesn't surprise me in the least. Good, good guy and some great stuff here. Thanks for sharing, 2MCM.

Mystery Meat, damn that was funny! All kidding aside, the way this thing went down was awful. One of the people axed, Ben White, writes a column for my section every week. A great guy, too.
