It has been suggested (but I have no proof) that the print side may be no more.

I know Exum from forever ago. This was his dream job, and he gave up a rather safe gig in Boston to move down there, from what I gather. Good luck, buddy.

When I first heard the news, I hadn't seen Waid's name of the list yet but then I saw this post. Can't believe they got rid of one of the founders. The size of the cut is stunning by itself, but that name alone is a whole different shock. I suscribed to that paper from 1992 to about 2002 when I stopped watching NASCAR, just an incredible job done each week. I subscribe to National Speed Sport News and love it, but quite a bit of the content there (outside of the columns) has already been run elsewhere, i.e. Bruce Martin's stuff. Not so with Scene, at least back in the day.
Lot of cuts last year with guys like Mulhern and Pedley (plus others that landed at Racin' Today), then Indy Star cutting one motorsports positions. And now this. Race fans are really losing out.

Jim Utter (Charlotte Observer) tweet: " #NASCAR Scene gave out severence checks to those fired, took their office keys and computers and had them escorted them out the door."

Here is what Mike Mulhern posted on his site this afternoon:
One of stock car racing’s most venerable publications, NASCAR Scene, is apparently shutting down, according to several people working for that operation.
The move was unexpected, and details were not immediately available.

Here is the link, keep in mind the story will probably be added to:

Utter also tweeted that NASCAR Scene is being combined with the monthly NASCAR Illustrated.

Add photographer Mark Sluder and Shea Alexander to the list of layoffs ...

I wonder if any of the other publications (such as Sports Business Daily or Sporting News) were affected?

I'm wondering the same thing. They seemed to be doing really well before the economy tanked and they had a good business model and management.

What the fuck happened to treating people with dignity? Isn't enough indignity to take away someone's job in this economy ... you have to treat them like a criminal, too? Pricks. May they all rot in hell...

Something else that I find surprising (and a little disturbing) -- been checking Sports Business Daily's Web site, and there's NOTHING about the layoffs and possible shutdown ... you'd think being in the same building those guys could get the scoop, unless the ownership said "hands off" ...
