NASCAR has Lost Its Soul

The fact that NASCAR was thought of as a Southern sport was the charm to the rest of the country. The roots of NASCAR were Junior Johnson, The Woods Brothers, Richard Petty, The Allisons from Hueytown Cale Yarborough, Darlington and Rockingham.

The national version of NASCAR is too sanitized and has lost a bit of its Southern roots.

NASCAR is on its way to making the same mistake the NHL did. They made too many decisions based on dollar signs $$$$.

I think NASCAR is a great sport. Unfornately, it still hasn't gotten its point across to the masses. Until that happens, it will be regarded as a good ol boy sport.

It was a good story, but USA Today beat the Times on this story. From November:

A Times-ian explained it once. Since Nascar is pronounced as a word, and not an acronym, it gets the lowercase. Not like you'd say, "So, Charlie, what do you think of that Naa-cp?"

Great quote to end the story by Kyle Petty...

    Headlines we'd like to see:

    PETTY CALLS NASCAR "COKE DEALERS"

That's another thing where this writer failed to convince me on the credibility of this article: Fact she interviewed Kyle Petty!!! The guy who has 8 wins in 792 races! :)

True, sxy, but you know better than I do that the Petty family and the media are joined at the hip. In this case, that's not a bad thing.

Yeah, but Petty could be like the career .240-hitting catcher who goes on to become a great manager -- not great in his playing days, but he knows how the sport and its people work. And then there's the family ties, which Sam Mills just pointed out.

Yeah but Petty is one of the most thoughtful and well-spoken drivers on the circuits. He is not afraid to express an opinion. Do you really see Jimmy Johnson or Kurt Busch saying what they really think about any related to the industry?

How in the hell did he ever win eight?

    It's a miracle.

It's a bullshit reason, but I guess it's better than nothing.
