He doesn't. He only intends to get back in the limelight for a brief flickering period. He won't hurt Obama nearly as much as he did Gore in 00, but it still might be enough to change the outcome if we get another razor close election.

Keep repeating that same old tired rhetoric.

Fact is, there are a multitude of bigger reasons why Gore didn't win the presidency. It started with him not carrying his, or Clinton's home state, and ended with the corrupt sham of the Florida recount and equally ridiculous Supreme Court decision. Besides, look at the numbers: Every third party on the ticket had enough votes to swing the Florida count either way, from Nader to Buchanan to the Socialist party.

Nader was the Dems' scapegoat for not running an effective campaign and allowing a slew of Democrats to cross party lines and vote Bush. Gore was so worried about being a centrist like Billy, he left the left wing of the party out in the cold.

I would imagine there are enough college students who think they are so much smarter than everyone else and so "above it" that Nader would have an impact. Heck, I think we've seen it this year with Ron Paul. There's no telling where that 5 to 10 percent he has garnered would have gone had his crazy ass not run.

Or if they would've voted at all.

Good point. Nothing brings out the typical abstainees like the promise of legalized weed. Another notch on Nader's board.

Probably equal to the number of left-wingers who won't vote for a black man or a woman. Which is to say very few, when all is said and done.

  8. The point is practically no one from the D's is going for Ralph this time around.

I did not make that statement, nor do I wish to ponder the words "Nader" and "three-way" in the same sentence.

Still, I don't see how he outflanks the most liberal senator in America to the left.

    It's unpossible.

A big reason hell. He is THE reason. Without Nader, Gore carries Florida by thousands of votes.

Remember, Pat Buchanan also got quite a few votes in Florida, too. And I'm not sure those all have to do with the "butterfly ballot."

The Reform Party & people with Buchanan's low-taxes/alarmist protectionism message both played ridiculously well with the AARP crowd.

... the last time a president won an election with more than 50% of the popular vote was George H.W. Bush in 1988. Third-party candidacies have been very influential in tipping every election since -- from Perot harming both Bush & Dole in both of Clinton's elections, to Nader harming Gore and Kerry in '00 and '04.

I believe we'll see even more big third-party candidates in the future. Nader on the left, and it wouldn't be a shock to see the Libertarians or some other third party nominate Ron Paul on the right.

I really, really, really wish some states would stand up to Ralph and say, hey, you fucking nuisance, not on our ballot. I know it'll never happen, but damn, would it be nice to put a little needle in his ego.
